“What you think influences a very wide set of circumstances”  (T.O.C)

ree

There are numerous definitions of the word optimism, dating back centuries. It debuted in the English Language in 1759 and was introduced through translations of the philosopher Voltaire’s works and was derived from the French word optimisme (1737). Optimisme in turn was derived from the Modern Latin word optimum – a word used by another philosopher Leibniz (1710) meaning the greatest good/best.

Our definition of Optimism

Optimism is a quality: the tendency to assume great outcomes based on desire, effort and persistence.

We believe that wanting something often requires inputs that are suitable for the goal, hence why desire is a key element of our definition. Having the necessary concern to ensure our hopes are met, typically drives us to deliver. Desire can be a great motivator, especially if we clarify our aspirations.

Once we have the desire to achieve something, it is up to us to put in the graft towards the expected outcomes. Thinking and hoping in isolation, won’t take us forward. We need to be willing to do what it takes, for example going outside our comfort zone and moving towards our aim. Effort can be mental or physical depending on the situation, for example, ‘thinking about’ how one might apply content from a self-help book (mental) and then putting those aspects into practice (physical).

The benefits of our effort can be substantial, despite, at times, facing hurdles and challenges. Dealing with tough situations is part and parcel of life and navigating our way through these difficult times requires a level of resilience that ensures we drive on regardless of the bows with arrows coming our way. Keeping our eye on the prize reminds us of what we are striving for. Being persistent can help us to move forward. The quality of being resolute enables us to push on and gain ground as we pursue our current and future hopes.

Optimism can be an extremely beneficial force. It stands out as a quality that many people see as a differentiator. There is a wide spectrum of areas that can benefit from the qualities of optimism and we will draw on them to provide a range of ideas and content that we hope is useful for you in several ways.

We won’t ‘fall in love’ with the semantics regarding the nature of optimism. Is it a skill? Is it about the future? Is it a belief? Is it a concept? Is it about knowledge? Is it a talent? Is it a philosophy? Is it an idea? Is it an attitude? Is it a trait? Let’s relax over the meaning of optimism! Instead, we will be focused on practical application and deriving worthwhile benefits for our subscribers.

We will deliver a wide range of blogs including stories and mini blogs that cover not only our primary area, optimism, but also other topics within our model:-

-       Identity

-       Goals

-       Belief

-       Upbeat

-       Bold

Our ambition is to draw on the topics above in order to craft insights and thought provoking comments, that aim to illuminate how to bring these concepts to life in practical terms such that they deliver interest and value for subscribers.

We will draw on our extensive experience in developing, training and coaching individuals and groups, at an organisational level as well as one-to-one situations.

One of the major attributes of optimism is that it is future facing and as such, we have the chance to reshape our outlook, perspective and expectations of situations looking forward.
